Things to Do (Activities, Trips & Tours)

Monday Movie Nite – No Movie this week due to the Packers playing at 7:30 pm.

Dart-Ball –After Tony’s Tigers won the first game, 1-0 on Betty Hellesvig’s home run, the Bobcats came back to win the second 3-1.  A two run rally by Butch Klamrowski, Bob Spangenberg and Bob White won it after Bev Campbell had driven in the first run.  Howie Klamrowski drove in the Tiger run.  Mona Verhein and Tony Agenta had a hit in each game for the Tigers.  No Dart-Ball next week due to Thanksgiving Holiday.

When to Stop Driving

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:JAS5pbOWUYl8vM:http://www.fsbsumner.com/images/Misc/cartoon%2520car%25201.jpgA driver’s chronological age is not a good predictor of driving ability.  What counts on the road is performance.  Here are a few of the signs of diminished capacity for driving safely:

·        Feeling uncomfortable and nervous or fearful while driving.

·        Difficulty staying in the lane of travel.

·        Having a series of minor accidents or near misses.

·        Having wandering thoughts or being unable to concentrate.

·        Being unable to read ordinary road signs.

·        Slower response to unexpected situations.

·        Difficulty seeing the sides of the road when looking straight ahead.

·        Getting lost on familiar roads.

·        Having other drivers honk at you frequently.

·        Being spoken to about your driving by police, family and friends.

If you notice one or more of these warning signs you may want to have your driving assessed by a professional or attend a driver refresher class. You may also want to consult with your doctor if you are having unusual concentration or memory problems, or other physical symptoms that may be affecting your ability to drive.

Getting Additional Help

Many motor clubs affiliated with the American Automobile Association offer refresher courses for older drivers.  So do some chapters of the National Safety Council and the American Association of Retired Persons.

These courses can update you on changes in traffic laws, signs, signals, markings and offer actual behind-the-wheel assessments, which can be especially helpful in sharpening your driving skills.

Behind-the-wheel assessments are also offered by some physical rehabilitation specialists; these can be very important when one’s driving abilities have been affected by a stroke or other serious ailment.
